The Indiana University Apprenticeship Program (IUAP) was established in 1978 to develop qualified, skilled craft workers for Facility Operations at IU Bloomington. The IUAP offers participants the opportunity to advance their careers through full-time, four-year apprenticeships in Facility Operations.
Apprentices engage in four years of on-the-job training and craft-specialized classroom instruction. The university covers educational expenses, while the apprentice attends class and studies on his or her own time. Upon successful completion of the program, apprentices are certified through the Department of Labor in their specific craft and begin working as a journey-level craftsperson at IU.
Currently, apprenticeships are offered in the following crafts:
- Carpenter
- Electrician
- Elevator mechanic
- Heating mechanic
- Sheet metal mechanic
The IUAP is jointly sponsored by IU and Local 832 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). The IUAP is registered with the Office of Apprenticeship of the United States Department of Labor.
The Joint Apprenticeship Committee (JAC) administers the program and this committee consists of three IU management representatives and three AFSCME Local 832 representatives.
